We’ve teamed up with our national partner, Save The Children®, on its Get Ready. Get Safe. initiative to help families become more prepared for emergencies. We invite you to complete the three Prep Steps with your children – step #3 is below, or you can start at the beginning if you’re just joining us!
Regardless of the type of disaster or emergency, there are essential items and supplies that your family will need to have easy access to. Once you create your family emergency plan, you’ll want to stock up on these items for your home and for portable emergency kits.
Disaster Supplies to Have On Hand at Home
Some emergency situations will require you to stay in your home. By having basic survival items in a designated area of your house, your family will have easy access to key supplies in the event of a crisis. Here are a few of the recommended items on the Save the Children Disaster Supplies Checklist:
- Medical supplies (first aid kit, antibacterial ointment, etc.)
- Personal information (copies of birth certificates/passports, photos of each family member, etc.)
- Water
- Extra clothing for each family member
- Fire extinguisher
- Non-perishable food items
- Blankets
- Flashlight
- Radio
Essential Items to Pack in a ”Go Bag”
Disasters that require you to evacuate can leave you with little to no time to gather items. Having emergency backpacks or ”go bags” ready to go and filled with essential items for your family can make all the difference. Items to include are:
- In Case of Emergency (ICE) Card (Haven’t created one yet? Check out Step #1)
- A comfort item – for your child this might be a teddy bear or favorite toy
- Hygiene items (toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, etc.)
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Whistle
- Activities/games
Have your child help you put together the go bag. Before you get started, introduce some of the items that will go into your go bag by playing this fun, safety-themed memory game!
Disaster Supplies Memory Game

- Print copies of the memory game cards.
